According to Professor Chyong-fang Ko from the Taiwanese Central Research Institute, Vietnamese brides account for 35% of 338000 foreign brides in Taiwan, or around 118300 women, mainly from the south of Vietnam. According to the Korean Statistics Office, the total number of Vietnamese brides married to Korean men nearly doubled to 10131 in 2006 from 5822 in 2005. In an interview with The Yale Globalist, social worker Bui Van Anh from the province of Ben Tre said, “In some villages here, almost everyone has family members or knows someone who is married to foreign men.”

30 Rock star Alec Baldwin was joking around recently on The Late Show with David Letterman about getting himself a mail-order bride from the Philippines. His flip comedic statement might have been a mistake. In fact, he has angered a Phillipine Senator, who is hitting back hard with a prediction that the actor may face violence if he ever visits. The actor is no stranger to controversy. The public divorce between Baldwin and actress Kim Bassinger became a he said, she said war of words that played out on the world stage. It even caused a heated controversy involving his 13 year old daughter Ireland, when a taped conversation that the actor left on her cell phone hit the internet. In the audio tirade, he unleased a firestorm of rage on his daughter, calling her a thoughtless little pig. Baldwin told Letterman that he would love to have more children. He explained to the talk show host that he is thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this pointor a Russian one. Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla called Baldwin arrogant and labeled his remarks insensitive, uncalled for and an insult to millions of Filipinos. Revilla went on to say that it is against the law to buy a mail-order bride. In what sounded very much like a threat, he said, Let him try to come here to the Philippines and hell see mayhem.
